29th October 2023 More work for you to do.

Goodaye all, nearly a standard week, start and load Monday for a round trip Dubbo to Albury/ Melbourne to Dubbo/Brisbane then Coonamble and home in five days, near four actual. Off a day early this week as preloaded Friday and soon back to Albury again for an early unload Monday morn. Two small wins this week and every one worth the effort, though most don’t get real results as quick.

There is a hole on the Olympic Way between west Wyalong and Barmedman. There have been traffic lights there for months with one lane closed and so without sensor lights, not a busy road, so most traffic has to stop. It does not look like a million dollar hole, so I rang the fellow I have dealt with about this road for some years and suggested it would be costing them more to have the lights there for that long, than it would to fix the road. He has moved on from that role but still works in the area.

He replied quoting it as a sink hole, so maybe it was worse than it looked, but within two days, there was a work crew there and I hope it will have been fixed by the time I get there tonight. In the scheme of things, just another waste of fuel, brakes and time from our point of view, but three months or more does not seem reasonable to me.

There is a number you can ring about issues with the current work on Cunninghams Gap. I had noted there was a consultation meeting, but I could not get there and had kept the number. I had months of calls and discussions with the local area council, Scenic Rim has responsibility to the top of the Gap, about the “TRUCKS MUST USE LEFT LANE” sign at the start of the westbound climb which initially they said weren’t there and I was mistaking them for KEEP LEFT UNLESS OVERTAKING which of course, I was not. They simply would not listen to my concerns and sorry, I gave up.

Now at the helipad there is a “NO TRUCKS” in right hand lane sign and I suggested that was both unreasonable and prejudiced. I had heard and there is now a large Variable Message board asking cars to give trucks a fair go, as many cars had refused to let trucks out where the works now go back to one lane. I explained it was completely unreasonable for an empty truck to have to sit behind others all the way from the top to the bottom, whether another loaded truck or a ute with a horse float etc. Of course the local police would not act on the sign, would they and fine us simply because they can, never. But I don’t want that option there as just another revenue raising opportunity as there are plenty of others about.

I got a call back to say both signs will be replaced with “Slow moving vehicles must use left lane” which is fair and better for all, but more so for trucks. Yes tiny and not ground breaking, but the fellow has two other questions to pursue and has agreed to keep in touch and follow up more, a good outcome then.

Now the NTC is calling for responses to its Regulatory Impact Statement on the HVNL review. When you first look at it and start to read, I believe it is daunting, but in discussions with the NTC, they have said you do not have to respond to every question and all who contribute, whether fully or in part, will be heard.

We have waited a long time for this review and it seems, we have waited even longer to see it through. Will there be sufficient and suitable change to make it all worthwhile, well that is up to you. You can sit back and say, nothing will change anyway, or you can contribute and hopefully be a part of the solution, instead of part of the problem.

Will we get perfection and all the things we have wished for, no, that is perhaps too much to hope for. But we could get enough useful changes to see things improve enough to justify the time and effort and to make the job fairer and better by removing or at least reducing the onerous and often unreasonable penalties given for things that have little to do with actual road safety. But I can’t preempt the outcome, I can only hope they listened to all who have submitted.

I certainly spent many hours writing replies to the original 7 documents they released, each 70 pages or more of reading before you answered a single question. I also complained the process, which I had asked be simple and straightforward to encourage many to respond and contribute, was anything but! Then I spent another hour on the side of the road on the way to Perth, to speak to the reviewer of the review, so he did get to speak to one of the few actual drivers who submitted. One of the comments he made during that conversation was, “All this stuff about bullshit fines for clerical and minor errors isn’t true is it? The police say it doesn’t happen.” Funny that when they are now the biggest problem with the NHVR saying and at least in the states they control, now promoting the ‘education before enforcement’ mantra.

Now I am asking you all to at least have a look and respond. It may be as simple as one thing you really see needed or improved, it may be much more and take you a couple of hours, but this process has taken a long time, will probably never be repeated in our lifetimes and you have a chance to have a say and make a difference. Please don’t ignore or miss this last chance for real reform in the HVNL. The other catch of course, is that you have to have it in by the 24th November, so not a real amount of time to do so.

Like all these things, if only one driver contributes, they will say, “so no one cares and we can do what we want” whereas if a thousand drivers contributed, they would certainly listen a damn site more. Even if you did not contribute initially, you now have the chance to look at the proposed outcomes from those that did. Of course, the other side, who have many staff and plenty of time did contribute and do you think they said we are all good drivers and should be respected for the job we do? If you do, Santa will be bringing your presents down the chimney very soon.

I hope you can use this link to a better review piece, but if not, go to the NTC website and look for HVNL Review RIS. Please have a go. Safe Travelling, Rod Hannifey. Link won’t paste, sorry.

22nd October 2023 Late note.

Goodaye all, sorry for the gap and this will be a bit longer as a busy couple of weeks and amazingly, went mostly to plan. Had spoken to work and had permission to attend CMCA National Rally in Dalby with truck last Saturday, so Monday two weeks ago headed off to Brissie, unload and reload and out to Coonamble, thinking this will work, back in Brissie Thursday, get Icepack checked and scales sorted or so I thought. Called work on way into Dubbo, no we are not sending you to Melbourne so you can be in Dalby, but have a roadtrain for you to Nevertire and Cobar!

But by time hooked up, Cobar was looking like an overnight stop, but off we go, then into Nevertire to have fork run out of fuel and lady said, yes this happens all the time and it just starts once we put fuel in, not so. Got out the shifter and bled the fork, got it going, got out the gate with a foot to spare in the train and away again. We had spoken to Cobar, could I unload late and was still on my estimated arrival time of 5.30 and arranged to ring leaving Nevertire, did so and they asked me to ring coming in and they would unload me.

That all went to plan, got out to the top of the first hill, had creamed rice and grandsons’ cookies for tea (Thanks Kody) and replaced some green reflectors there. Please when I put them up, try not to run over the guideposts, then they will still be there for many years. Stopped and did another bay on the way home, now my time my own and back into Dubbo and to bed.

Off to load Thursday morning, away early and rang and booked into Icepack, yes they will fit me in, Ok will be in tonight split up and ready when you open. Was there a bit longer than planned, had to repack the toolbox after they found and fixed the problem, but thanks again ICEPACK for your support of the TIV over the years. Having just gone through some of the Hansard review of the oral submission to the NSW inquiry, I even gave them a plug there.

One down, unload and reload, considered trying for scales upgrade, but now too late, so out to Gatton to pick up dog trailer, to Charlton pads to drop it and off to Dalby to start my 24 hour break. Was due in the next morning really and they wanted me onsite early as was an open day for the public as well, but to fit the 24, this worked better as had to be In Melbourne for Monday, but back to that later. Watched some of the music and dancing, had some tea, and to bed.

The organisers were not sure how many would turn up, this was the last seminar, the last day, public open day and they had expected me the week before as well. We had initially months before, booked a day each end with the view I should be able to make one, but they then thought I was coming twice and that is too much. I had many walking past early before my 10 AM session asking questions, a few as to why I had a truck parked in the middle of 750 campervans, motorhomes and caravans, but in the end had a good crowd and overflowed the tent.

Then had many inspect the truck and ask more questions so was busy from 8 till after noon, over 120 attended the session, organisers were very happy and a few more now with some understanding and hopefully empathy, to our work and needs on the road. Off back to Charlton, hook up the dog, down to Dubbo to have the dog partly unloaded and transhipped onto my A trailer which had a reline and some stuff done, had a visit from Daughter Katie and kids and new granddaughter Lisa Ann born Thursday, thanks for the coffee and lunch, then off to Melbourne.

In late Sunday night, up and wait for some space to unload, then head round and reload, light load and out early and through nearly to Dubbo, radio from Forbes then bed and Tuesday through Dubbo to Brissie again for Wednesday. Unloaded early and had some fans of the Nightshift spot say “gday” and that they listen via the podcast. A bit of time spare, so in to Tramanco for the scales upgrade to record road problems. First trial last week, 125 hits form the road 1.8 G or above, See how we go now and speaking with fellow on the way out, recording of hits now working, data following and a few more tweaks to sort and then plan to do a full Brisbane/Melbourne run and list all the issues and then chase each state to fix the roads. Stop laughing, or you might hurt yourself.

Out with a load of bulk DG Wednesday afternoon to Moree, first of four drops Thursday, back into Dubbo to sort AB and C service for the truck as this was the other reason for the plan. All this two weeks had three aims, get to Dalby and then be home to get the services done while I get to Canberra Friday for the Heavy Vehicle Rest Area Steering Committee meeting, and I made it to both, even though a late trip down to Canberra and confirmed late Friday evening service all done.

So I can’t comment on the meeting but as always, am positive it will be worthwhile in the long term. I did report on my NSW oral submission and my meeting with TMR and am looking forward to a press release from the minister in the future. I stayed over in Canberra, as had possible plans to do some filming, but that didn’t work out, so did some more green reflectors on the way home.

Now catching up, download some audiobooks for next week and Monday loading time been brought forward, so will have to be out early to load. Till next time, Safe Travelling, Rod Hannifey.

9th October 2023

9th October, short and sweet, two trips to Brissie last week, stopped on the way home to spend an hour on the phone responding to questions (along with others) from the committee of the NSW Parliamentary inquiry, then had a phone hook up with TMR and daylight saving and trying to load then at the same time meant it was not perfect, but got my say in and messages through. Had a quiet day Sunday watching Bathurst, but did my OD column and some other catch up stuff and off to Brissie again soon today. Safe Travelling, Rod.

2nd October 2023

Goodaye all, yes the ride height valve was broken, but I managed to bodgy it to get home and that was where the week started and went wrong from, at least that is my first excuse of many. So last week was not the best for many reasons, the biggest was I let 17 different things get on top of me, lost concentration for a few seconds and tore a split in the A trailer curtains while manoeuvring in our Sydney depot. It will take me awhile to forgive myself, yes it has been patched and will be there for the rest of the life of those curtains to remind me to be more careful and not let other stuff take my attention. BUGGER. I had also caught the edge of the tank step with the trailer at some mungrel of a driveway and that didn’t help, cause I only saw it when I got to the depot.

I did ring Ben and leave a message, saw him the next day and he said ”Why did you do that? But it doesn’t happen very often” and I said, “First time in 14 years I think”, so it took me a day or two to get over that. It had felt like things were building up, lots on, lots on mind, things to finish and get in for enquiries etc, but from my view it was the third, you know the “things come in threes” notion.

So then repair curtain, still needs a bit of blue touch up paint to tidy it up and finish it better. Off to Melbourne Wednesday and could have been stuck there for the four days, it was maybe, maybe OK, maybe not etc, but finally got out with a load and off soon to Moree and then Toowoomba. So could not make it to Gatton, hear it was a big show and NRFA had a stand there so hope you visited and joined up if you were there.

Got loaded Thursday after a long drive down the peninsula for a delivery, bit of a delay loading as I got there late and then asked another driver if I could push in as I got through the roundabout, but then had to move across as well, he let me, but said he had been sitting there for 30 minutes and having come in off a side road, I wasn’t aware of the real problem and it only took 50 minutes to travel the 2 k to join the freeway, another 20 to get past the prang right after the on ramp, hence the delays.

Back into Dubbo Friday, found an air leak no one else could and had been really annoying me, made an effort to fix the step and have just finished it properly now along with some other my time truck jobs and off soon. Put some 3M clear coating on the right hand side fuel tank, but need one more piece, damn, but they look better with it on and of course had to get all the tar off first and do a bit of touch up.

Will be presenting before the NSW Inquiry into issues affecting truckies via zoom, Thursday and it is good they have acted so fast, let us hope they keep that momentum and do something positive instead of the normal knee jerk, well intentioned but unfortunately make things worse, kind of outcome we normally end up with. I have sent a new list of bad roads to Transport for NSW, replied to a letter back from the communications Minister about lack of phone service on the Newell (yes I know it is bad elsewhere too), offered the NSW Roads Minister a ride along and still working on a paper for the NHVR re roads etc.

Big week in Canberra this week with the first of the recommendations from the Senate Inquiry into a Safe and Viable Road Transport Industry part of the legislation up for discussion and thanks to the other members of the NRFA board who will be attending there and pushing our case for that change and with the intent to see the other recommendations follow. Till next week, Safe Travelling, Rod Hannifey.
